Thank you for the additional information. Your poor little guy! I doubt that fleas have caused the extensive hair loss, scabbing and itching that you are describing. I have a feeling that your little man might have a type of mange called demodex. This mange mite is not contagious to other animals or people but can cause a great deal of itching, thickened skin and hair loss. Dogs with generalized demodex (demodex infection that covers most of the body) are usually pretty uncomfortable. This mite is treated with the medicine ivermectin, or with mitaban dips. It is diagnosed by skin scraping, and can take months to treat. In a case like yours, your dog will likely need oral antibiotics and some medicines to help with the itching as well. Please see the following website for more information on demodex.

Another type of mange called scabies can also be the culprit. This mange can be contagious to other dogs, and even to people sometimes (though it generally stays within the canine species). Please see the following website for more information on scabies.

The e-collar is a great idea, as it will keep him from ripping himself apart further. You can also give benedryl (diphenhydramine) 25mg every 8 hours for the itching. It will also make him sleepy so hopefully it will give him some relief. It would be a good idea to have him seen by a vet tomorrow so that he can get some relief as soon as possible, I know he must be miserable. If you are not comfortable with your current vet, see another one at another hospital if necessary. Tell them you are worried about mange, and let me know if I can be of further assistance. If this has been helpful, please hit the green accept button. Best of luck with your handsome man, I hope he feels better very soon :)
