Question

I just noticed a grapefruit sized lump on the left side of my 13 year old golden retriever's neck. She has just recently slowed down on her eating but otherwise is acting normal. The lump is really firm to the touch and does not seem to be painful. Please help.

Answer

Hello,

If your dog is taking thyroid medication, you don't mention if she's hyperthyroid or hypothyroid, but what you're describing on the side of her neck may be an enlargement of her thyroid gland, due to her condition, and also attributed to her current medication dosage.

Because you just noticed this new symptom, it would be advisable for your dog to be evaluated in person by her vet, as soon as possible. Once the cause is definitely diagnosed, she will be treated, and her thyroid medication may need adjusting.

I hope all will be well with your dog.
