Question

My dog got into a fight with another dog today and ripped off one of his canines. The whole tooth is just hanging in his mouth by a bit of his gums. How long should I wait for if to fall out before considering taking him to the vet?

Optional Information

Pet's Sex: Male
Pet's Age: 6

Already Tried:
Mom tried to push it back into the socket initially but it wasn't going back in (too much of the tooth was pulled out). Now we're just waiting. It's been about 8 hours since the fight.

He doesn't have any other injuries that we can find and neither does the other dog. We think that maybe he got his mouth stuck in the other dogs collar while they were fighting. He was pawing at his mouth at first but now that the tooth is laying on the side of his gum he doesn't seem to be too bothered with it. It was bleeding at first but not anymore. It doesn't look infected. He has had water, but I'm not sure about food.

Answer

Thank you for the additional information. This is a pretty uncomfortable injury. There is a massive amount of force involved to remove a healthy canine tooth. This tooth needs to be removed by a vet, and some antibiotics and pain medicines would be very kind. I think that it would be ok to watch your dog tonight, since he doesn't appear to be too uncomfortable, and have him seen by his vet first thing in the morning. Pick up his food bowl before you go to bed, in case they want to sedate him and remove the tooth tomorrow. Now that this tooth is damaged, the possibility of infection is high. Major complications can arise from this situation and it will be easier and less expensive to manage the earlier you have it addressed. Please have your dog seen tomorrow and let me know if I can be of further assistance. If this has been helpful, please hit the green accept button. Best of luck with your handsome man, I hope he feels better soon :)
