Welcome to Just Answer, this sounds like the turbo bearings have failed.

When they fail the turbo shaft has too much free play and engine oil gets drawn into the inlet and then the engine runs on its own oil and not the diesel fuel, this is why it runs on its own and the ignition switch has no effect.

It can be checked by taking off the inlet pipe to the turbo and seeing if the turbine shaft has excessive movement, if it has it will need replacing'

Usually the cause of this failure is the filter in the "banjo" bolt gets clogged and starves the turbo of oil, the new turbo when fitted either needs a new banjo or the filter needs removing.

I hope this helps, best regards, XXXXXXX.
