Question

When i turn the temperature dial on my 1997 mercury sable on het I hear a clicking noise. I investigated and I found out the the lever on the heater core underneath the dashboard keeps on moving. When I push it up, hot air is circulating but it won't stay in that position. It'll move down again and cold air is coming out.

If you park in an area that has a lot of trees there is a strong possibility that leaves and other debris has entered the heater box through the air intake. The debris could have found its way to the heater fan acting as a buffer against the heater directional flap. I know this sounds crazy but this is what happens if too much debris gets caught up in the system. In most cases in dry weather it will circulate through the vents or we can also use compressed air to blow it out. I hope we're heading in the right direction, this advice will save you money and time if you can fix it yourself.NYAnswer38671.6837662384

I found the problem myself. In front of the heater core is a little plastic box. Inside is a little motor which drives some gears and the gears drive a driveshaft which operates the flap for the air. Some of the gears were completely broken off. I bought a new ( I dont know the name) for $73.00 and the problem was solved. Thanks again Peter
