Answer

Rhode Island is fairly stingy. They'll allow you to collect unemployment if you quit for what it calls "good cause" which generally must be related to the employment. The examples they give are sexual harassment or illegal discrimination. Quitting to relocate is generally not related to the job itself and is not likely to be considered good cause.

doesn't relocation to be with my wife (if she is getting a new job) considered good cause?

Accepted Answer

I agree with you that it is a good cause, but not one as defined by Rhode Island.

The good cause has to be related to the job itself, not personal issues unrelated to the job. Your wanting to relocate with your wife is a good cause, but it relates to personal issues (namely, the relocation of your wife) and not issues with the job.

The limited definition is to allow people to quit abusive work situations and still be able to claim unemployment, but it really only applies when there is a problem with the job itself that compels you to leave, not issues unrelated to the job itself.
