Question

My 4 year old cat was very lethargic, was not eating, seemed very weak, and had trouble breathing. I took him to the vet and they did xrays they said he had fluid surrounding his lungs. The doctor admitted him and tapped his chest. He said visually the fluid did not look like FIP but more like pus. After a few days in the hospital I was able to bring him home. About 4 days later I noticed his breathing was bad again, he still really hadn't eaten, and wasn't gaining strength. I took him back to the vet and the doctor this time wanted to drain his chest and change his medication. She drained his chest and sent him home with me. He has been a whole new cat, eating, drinking, sort of playing, and acting more like himself. Today I noticed that he seemed to be breathing faster than normal, but he is still eating and is alert. Could this be FIP or could this be a bacterial infection he may have gotten from a kitten I adopted a month ago that had a serious infection as well?

Answer

Hi,

I won't say that it is impossible that this is FIP, but I think its more likely that your vet is right and this is a serious bacterial infection. Here are my reasons for this: FIP more commonly causes fluid in the abdomen rather than the chest (though it can happen). The main reason I don't think its FIP is because usually once cats reach the stage where fluid is accumulating they don't improve, their condition just steadily declines no matter what you do. Here is a link to a page about FIP:

Continue to monitor him closely. Its a good sign that he's still eating and acting good. If he should develop more fluid accumulation, you may want to have your vet do a culture and sensitivity test on the fluid to determine for sure if there's a bacterial infection and which antibiotics its sensitive to.

My vet seems to think it is FIP. I think that it is something bacterial. He has been on two types of antibotics the one is half a pill called Zeniquin and a liquid called Doxycycline. With his breathing getting worse as of today when I take him to the Vet tomorrow I feel like the dr is going to want to put him to sleep.

Why does the vet think its FIP when they didn't think the fluid looked right for it?

They ran some blood work tests and said his protien levels were high and that is a sign of FIP. My cats hasn't really eaten until this week. When I had him at the Vet on Monday they tapped his chest again and this time they said it resembled FIP, but the first time it was more pus like.

Answer

Okay, given this additional information it is more likely that this is FIP. However, if he's still eating well and acting okay you certainly do not have to euthanize him tomorrow. I don't see any harm in continuing to try to treat him as long as he keeps eating. I would keep him away from the kitten if possible though. You could also get a second opinion from another vet if you don't feel confident in this one.

I just don't feel confident putting him to sleep when the first time it was more pus-like and this time it wasn't. The thing that bothers me about the whole situation is that he was perfectly fine until i adopted the kitten. Which was the end of Aug. He did not get better until the beginning of Oct. and about a week later the older cat got sick. Is there any way it could just be what the kitten had?

If you don't feel its the right time to put him to sleep, then it isn't. What was wrong with the kitten?

He had some sort of infection, i don't think they ever really told me. Some type of upper respiratory infection. My cat doesn't have any pus coming out his nose or eyes. While I was reading about FIP i saw a lot of information about how their eyes can be glossy or even bloody and my cat has none of that.

Anything is possible though I think your cat would have gotten sick sooner if he was going to catch something from the kitten. Illnesses are usually the most contagious shortly before symptoms show up, and then in the first few days of sickness. Even considering an incubation period it is still a long time. And, unfortunately every cat doesn't have every symptom of FIP. Websites usually just list all of them that are possible. I am NOT trying to convince you to put your cat to sleep though. I really think you would do best getting a second opinion. If your kitty is eating and acting okay then he is not suffering.
