Hello!
I have received your question regarding the read-only file attribute.
What you're experiencing is normal and should not affect anything within Windows. Are you receiving an error message or having a problem doing something in Windows?
If you're interested in the full background and reason behind this answer, Microsoft has a great article that outlines it extensively.
The complete article can be found here:

Thank you!
I can't download into a folder.
Example - I downloaded VLC media player last on 10/29 into a folder I specifically created for that purpose. I then installed from that folder. Today I tried to download an update from VLC into the same folder and it wasn't allowed. I created a new folder and still couldn't download the update. Get failed to open filename for writing.
Are you able to download the latest version from their website?
The latest version can be found here:
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html
Once that is downloaded, do you get an error when you try to run it?
I would also save the filename without any dashes or other characters in the filename. Call it something like VLC.exe
Thank you
OK, it worked. I downloaded into the folder created earlier today. It uninstalled the previous version and installed the latest. I executed and it worked.
I appreciate the solution to the download problem but can you explain why it didn't download when I tried to download from the VLC console after it checked for updates?
I accept your answer but can you offer up a possible explanation for this last question?
There are a couple possible reasons on why this happened.
I personally use VLC on a Windows 7 machine, and have trouble with the updates installing as well. I usually download the latest full release and reinstall when it becomes available.
I have heard of this error coming up when a file being downloaded has non-alpha characters in it (i.e. dashes) that I had you remove before downloading.
