Question

we just adopted an 8 yo dog who drinks water constantly, pees every hour, and has accidents in the house. What condition would cause this? What tests would determine if he has a bigger problem?

Hi,
The top diseases that come to mind are: diabetes mellitus, diabetes insipidus, urinary tract infection, Cushing's disease, and kidney failure. Stress from a new home could also cause excessive drinking (psychogenic polydipsia).

I would start with routine bloodwork (full chemistries and complete bloodwork) and a urinalysis. That will diagnose the diabetes mellitus, kidney problems, urinary tract infection, and point toward possible Cushing's disease. If all the bloodwork is normal, then your vet may recommend doing some sort of modified water deprivation test to see if the kidneys are able to concentrate urine (this should only be done under vet supervision--don't restrict your dog's water intake on your own).

It would be nice to try and find out why the family surrendered him...
