Question

I just found that I may be the father of a child born 38 years ago, who is now an adult. I was never told of this at all. What legal or other obligations do I have if this is true? Thanks

Answer

Thank you for contacting Just Answer.

Answer: If this is true, the main thing to be concerned about is whether your alleged child is entitled to any part of your estate when you die. In most cases, if you don't want him or her to inherit anything, you need to specifically exclude the child in your will, with a statement to the effect of "I specifically exclude XXXX XXXXX from receiving any part of my estate upon my death."

I can't think of any other legal obligations you may have. It's up to you whether you wish to get to know this child, and any grandchildren you may have.

There can sometimes be a delay of an hour or more in between my followup answers because I may be helping other customers, or taking a break. If we're writing late in the evening, I may need to get some sleep and resume helping you the following morning.

Sometimes I'm unable to read your entire question until AFTER I write back to you. So, if I suggest something you already tried, it's because I couldn't see part of your original question. Just write back to me and let me know.

Are there any child support obligations that could be made to pay? And of course the moral issues are something I would want to fulfill. It's just a shame that I never knew until now.

Thanks

Accepted Answer

It's way too late for your child to collect child support from you so don't worry about that!

If all goes well, you'll be hugging, sharing photographs, etc etc - there will be a lot of tears.
