Hi Doc,

No he did not tense up or cry when I press his abdomen, he just looked at me when I tried to press slightly on his stomach, I think the bladder is a bit hard. My mum said he just pee a little thats all.

Am very worried. For now I need answer while I wait for the vet to open.

Answer

If the cat is not having a bowel movement, he could have a blocked colon. It is not uncommon in cats. He will need an enema and oral medication. If the bladder is blocked, the situation is very serious and the cat will need have the bladder catheterized to unblock it. If the cat has not eaten in several days, he is very sick. The sooner he is examined the better.

Hi Doc, is this fatal? I think I better get him to the doctor as soon as the vet opens. He;s my first cat and I am very very worried, Can;t even sleep.

catheterized - does this mean he needs an operation?

Hope you will answer my last question. Thanks Doc.

Cheers.

Accepted Answer

If the colon is blocked, it is not fatal. If the bladder is blocked, it can cause kidney damage which can be fatal. If the cat needs a catheter, he will need anesthesia and a catheter placed into the bladder so it can drain. The cats are usually hospitalized for 3-4 days in these cases. It is common in male cats but very serious. If he has not been eating, the liver can get into trouble and this is very, very serious. The cat's skin will look yellow when this occurs. Many cats do not survive this. The best case scenario would be a simple fever which requires fluids and an antibiotic for several days.
