Question

I found a beautiful kitten in a parking lot. Appears to be around 6-8 wks of age. It appears pretty healthy but wants to eat - gobbles down the food, vomits and then eats it again! It wants to eat the food of my 3 grown cats, too and then repeats the process. There was a lot of mucus the 1st day (Monday) the cat did this. That appears to have lessened. The cats eyes seem a little bulgy. Otherwise, the cat is playful and its coat is soft and beautiful. When I found it, it had a lot of "coal?" around its eyes which I've cleaned and it appears to be fine now. Any help you can give me would be appreciated as this is a major inconvenience because I have to put the other cats food on my counter and the kitten has jumped on my counter and then vomitted again. I'm disgusted - I want to put it up for adoption but I'm afraid when it does this somewhere else

Pet's Gender: Male
Pet's Age: <1
Type of Animal: Orange Tabby Kitten

Already Tried:
Giving less food - putting food bowls away, praying over the animal (I'm a believer) and that's about it. I'm feeding it Purina Kitten chow but it's also eating my other cats' Nine Lives.

Hello. Thanks for writing in. It may just be that he is eating too fast. You might want to only put a little bit of food down at a time or put a toy in the bowl so he has to eat slower to eat around it. With a found kitten, intestinal parasites are very likely as well. She may just need a routine dewormer, but certain worms and protozoal parasites are not susceptible to all over the counter dewormers. It may be best to have your vet do a fecal exam on her. A foreign body obstruction is possible. This usually decreases appetite, but a kitten with a partial obstruction may still retain a normal appetite. If the abdomen seems enlarged, intestinal parasites are a very likely diagnosis. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Hope this helps.

The abdomen is not enlarged - I have 3 other cats and it will go and find their food and eat it. As I've said, it vomits and then eats it again. I've tried less food, I guess I just need to take it to a vet. I'm on Social Security - hope it's not expensive. Also, doesn't a fecal exam require me to bring in a stool sample? It does eat fast but I've had him since Monday and well, I don't know - thought it would slow down by now. Thanks Doc.

Answer

Yes, you can bring in a fecal sample. I prefer to get a fresh sample in th exam room with a fecal loop, though. You can recover more parasites with a fresh sample. You can always try an over the counter dewormer first, but it is not gaurenteed to correct the problem or even get all parasites. Hope this helps.
