Question

My cat has had a mild diarhea the past two days and has thrown up mostly just liquid type with a few cat food pellets visible. This morning she had a spot of diarrhea on the sheet and when I pulled the sheet off to wash, there was some blood showing on the mattress pad. I called a local vet who said it sounded like colonitis but to bring her in. She is a rescue cat and has just been with me a few months. She has learned to trust in sitting by me and sleeping on the bed, but won't let me pick her up. The vet suggested shutting her in the bathroom which I did then putting her in the carrier . When I opened the bathroom door she freaked and I couldn't hold on to her. She is hiding under a bed or somewhere so I can't get her to the vet. Any suggestions as to home treatment?

Answer

Well, the obvious move is to see your vet, but in the meantime some home treatments you can try are Immodium AD. I would try to crush 1/2 tablet into a treat or something you know she will eat. For the vomiting, you can crush 1/4 tablet of pepcid twice daily as well. 1/2-1 teaspoons of maalox twice daily may also help.

If you can get a stool sample and at least bring that to the vet for a parasite screen, this is a good first step. I would also discuss with your vet the use of a sedative (ie valium), so you can get her in to be seen.

I hope this helps and gives you some direction

Thanks

I have some Lomotil on hand - would l/2 tablet of that in her food work?

Would the vet have to prescribe the valium to give her so I can get her there?

Thanks

Accepted Answer

Yes, you would need to get the vet to prescribe the valium. Not all will do this, but understanding the situation, some may. You can use this at a dose of (diphenoxylate) 0.025 mg/lb twice a day. I have found suggestions for higher doses, but I would stick to the low end.

I hope this helps

Thanks
