I have a desktop computer that was given to me knowing it needed a new hard drive. I replaced the hard drive but when I teun on the machine it says the system won't load from CD reader. WHat should I check for next?

replaced hard drive with a new one

If it tries to dead CDrom and skipping hard drive, means you did not connect the HD drive properly, please check connections and connect it as master and cdrom as slave but separate ribbon cables.
