Question

Dear Doctors, My dog is on a daily dose of Deramax for arthritis stemming from knee surgeries. Recently, he was put on Temaril-P for itching. Until I called for his typical Deramax renewal, I learned that he shouldn't be on both meds at the same time! I was alarmed. Searched the internet, but found no info on side effects of combining the meds. Dr. only mentioned ulcerated eyes? I'm not trusting my vet much these days and this seemed to be the last straw. What are all the possible side effects of combining these 2 meds? An aleery diet is out of the question (though it worked wonders) because he had urinary crystals and is on Urinary SO. (The urinary was more important than the allergies) Thank you for your time!

Hi XXXXXXXX, Well, Temaril P is a drug that contains a steroid. Deramaxx is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication. They are not supposed to be used together due to the fact that they can cause severe stomach ulcers. I have not heard of them causing ulcers in the eyes though. Now that being said, the dose of steroids in Temaril P is very small so the chance of him getting stomach ulcers from it combined with the Deramaxx is pretty slim. If I were you I would do the following: 1. Stop the Temaril P 2. Buy Prilosec OTC (omeprazole) from any drug store and give your dog 20mg once a day. This is an anti-ulcer medication. Do this every day for 30 days. 3. Try giving Benadryl for the itching. The dose is about 1-2mg per pound of body weight. So if you have a 50# dog you would give 50-100mg which is 2-4 tablets at a time. You can give that dose up to every 8 hours to control the itching. I agree with you. I would not change the diet. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have more questions or if you need help with dosing information. Dr. Hinson
