Question

We think our cat has colitis. For the first time today she didn't finish pooping and pooped in hallway. Then rubbed her butt along the floor like a dog. She has been treated for worms about a year ago. She is now an inside cat but she is a rescue about 5 yrs. ago and is deathly afraid of the cage to take her to vet. Could it be the hard cat food? Does she need to go to vet? She has both wet and dry food, various kinds. Thanks so much!

Hello there,

Is the cat straining in the litter box?

Is the stool loose?

She has hard stools, I don't think she's straining, it's in there long

Answer

If the stool is hard the cat does not have colitis. Colitis results in chronic diarrhea. Hard stools can indicate constipation. Hairball medicine, mineral oil or canned pumpkin can be mixed into the food as a laxative. A teaspoon of either twice a day is usually enough. It may be needed on and off long term. A food higher in fiber may also help. In severe cases, the cats are put on lactulose or cisapride.

I forgot to say there is blood occassionally in her stools and also she never spits up furballs but there was fur in her poop. She is an obsessive cleaner!

Accepted Answer

The fur is not digestible and could be slowing down the intestines. The blood usually comes from strainin to defecate. The mineral oil or hairball medicine will soften the stool some so it passes easier. The feces will look oily when it passes.
