Question

My dog has had irritated eyes for the last five days. It began in one eye and has seemingly extended to his other eye. His eyes are bloodshot and releasing a green mucus-like substance. They also seem to have shrunk some, as in he might be having some trouble keeping them wide open. Is there something I can do without having to take him in?

Hi,

I'm sorry your dog is having this trouble. It does sound from your description, like he has an eye infection, like conjunctivitis, and this can best be treated by a vet, after a definite diagnosis, with antibiotic eye drops and/or ointment. If you're in a financial bind and can't take him to the vet at this time, the following organizations listed at the link below, may help:

http://www.speakingforspot.com/helppayingforveterinarycare.html

For the moment, place cool damp wrung out tea bags (regular tea) on his eyelids, and this may help draw out infection; also, flush his eyes with sterile saline solution made for eyes (eyewash), and you can try some Terramycin ointment, a mild ophthalmic antibiotic found in some pet supplies and online at www.revivalanimal.com
Because this is a 'mild' antibiotic, if you don't see improvement in a day or two, your dog will need a stronger medication to resolve his eye problem, and this can only be prescribed by the vet.

I hope all will be well with your dog.
