Question

I give up with symantic tech support. I have Norton 360 antivirus on my Thinkpad. I need to disable all of its functions which I did in the settings menu. Everything. Now when I run a program (I test chairlift cables with an electromagnetic device that feeds data to the thinkpad, I keep getting a yellow pop-up notification from the task bar that states "Norton 360 currently performing background tasks". This keeps popping up. Any ideas on how I can turn this off?

Answer

Hi,

I would turn on silent mode first

If that doesnt do it, assuming you have the version 2009, do the following. Other versions will be similar...

There is a possiblility for Idle Time Scan running in the background. If it is set for Daily basis, then Norton may run the scan from background whenever your computer is idle. When you does not use the computer or leave the computer, computer enters the Idle state and Norton will run the scan in the background. Norton 2009 uses the Idle Time Scan to automatically detect the idle state of your computer and runs a weekly Full System Scan when the computer is idle. That may be the reason for message in the screen regarding Background tasks. Disable the Idle Time Scan or re-schedule it and then check whether the issue happens again. Here are the steps to disable the idle time scan:

1. Start Norton 2009 program.

2. In the Computer pane, click Settings.

3. Under Computer Scans, near Idle Time Scan, select Off from the drop-down menu.

4. Click Apply > OK.

Thanks,

Carl

There is no such catagory in the settings. this is Norton 360. In the settings, there are the following settings: Antivirus, Firewall, Antispam, My Network, Identitiy protection, Tasks and Scheduling, Administrative Settings. Under Tasks and Scheduling I have all of the catagories unchecked and scheduling set to Manual.

OK, if you have 360, run silent mode when you use your program.

We still have to operate within the contraints of norton, so you can supress it for 6 hours at a time while running your program. (norton 360 bugs me, everything is a constant battle)

here is the process

  • Silent Mode
You can manually turn on Silent Mode at any time for a given time of up to 6 hours.

During the time Silent Mode is on, Norton suppresses most of its activities but still protects you against viruses and spyware. When you manually turn Silent Mode off, Norton 360 resumes its normal operation and runs the postponed activities.

If you are concerned about the activities Norton 360 performed during the Silent Mode session, you can review them in the Security History window under Full History. This Silent Mode summary includes the type, time and actions performed during the time when Silent Mode was switched on.

How to turn Silent Mode on and off in Norton 360

Silent Mode in Norton 360 can be manually turned on for a specified duration of one hour, two hours, four hours, or six hours time.

Silent Mode in Norton 360 can be turned on or turned off from the Settings window, or by clicking the Norton 360 tray icon in the Windows notification area.

To turn on Silent Mode from the Settings window do the following:

  1. Click Settings in the Norton 360 main window
  2. Click Administrative Settings in the Settings window
  3. Move the switch to the left to the On position under Silent Mode Settings, in the Silent Mode row
  4. Click Apply in the settings window
  5. In the Turn on Silent Mode dialog box, in the Select the duration drop-down list, select how long you want to turn on Silent Mode, and then click OK

To turn off Silent Mode from the Settings window do the following:

  1. Click Settings in the Norton 360 main window
  2. Click Administrative Settings in the Settings window
  3. Move the switch to the left to the Off position under Silent Mode Settings, in the Silent Mode row
  4. Click Apply in the settings window
  5. In the Turn on Silent Mode dialog box, in the Select the duration drop-down list, select how long you want to turn on Silent Mode, and then click OK

To turn on or off Silent Mode from the notification area do the following:

  1. In the notification area on the Windows taskbar, right-click the Norton 360 icon, and then click Turn on or off Silent Mode
  2. In the Turn on Silent Mode dialog box, in the Select the duration drop-down list, select how long you want to turn on Silent Mode, and then click OK
