Under the federal law and law of many states, "firearm" is defined in such a way as to exlude black powder rifles and handguns. Unfoturtunately, that is not the case in Virginia.
In order to hunt with any firearm in Virginia, you need to get your civil rights (including firearm rights) restored. Here are some links to explore that possibility:
