Hi & welcome to JustAnswer.

Your thumbs.db file contains a storage of all of the thumbnail pictures in a folder. So if you have a folder with pictures in it, this file will store the "mini" version of that picture so you can look at them all without having to open them full size. You can remove these and prevent Windows from creating them and I will show you how.

First you will want to prevent Windows from creating the files, to do this:

To turn this feature off, do the following:

1) Open My Computer
2) Click on Tools
3) Click on Folder Options
4) Click on the View Tab
5) Place a check in the option "Do not cache thumbnails"
6) Click Ok
7) Close My Computer

Next you will want Windows to remove all of these files it has created, to do this:

1) Click on Start
2) Click on Search
3) Click on All Files and Folders
4) Type the following in the section called "all or part of the file name"
thumbs.db
5) In the Look in box, make sure Local Hard Drives is chosen
6) Click Search
7) A long list of thumbs.db files should appear, click on Edit, Select All
8) Click on File, and choose Delete
9) Close the Search Results window

Doing this can free up some disk space on your system, which I suspect is what you are after.

Let me know if you need any help! I will be here. Please also don't forget to hit "Accept" to my answer so I can get credit.

Thanks!

Hi Karl....It appears that the answer that you gave me yesterday, is for the windows XP systems, and not for the windows vista. Would you please check on this, and get back to me when you have an answer. George Shallbetter XXXXX@XXXXXX.XXX

Beginning with Windows Vista, thumbnail previews are stored in a centralized location on the system. This provides the system with access to images independent of their location, and addresses issues with the locality of Thumbs.db files. The cache is stored at %homedrive%\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer as a number of files with the label thumbcache_xxx.db (numbered by size); as well as an index used to find thumbnails in each sized database. However, when browsing network shares with write permission, Windows Vista SP1 stores a Thumbs.db file in the remote directory instead of using the (local) central thumbcache.[citation

Karl ....I guess this is the difference between XP and Vista. I will be waiting your reply. Thank you. George

Answer

Hi George,

The directions I gave will work for either XP or Vista. You asked specifically about "thumbs.db" files.

One note if you are having trouble..

In my first part of the answer, you will have to hit your "Alt" key to bring up the menu where "Tools" is located.

To clear your thumb cache instead of your thumbs.db files:

  • Click Start, type cleanmgr and press ENTER
  • Click My files only
  • Select the system drive letter from the drop-down list
  • Uncheck all the entries except Thumbnails
  • Click OK
Hope this helps!

Thanks
