Question

I have a 2004 Sonata 2.4L auto. For a while now everytime I shift into drive from park, I get this grinding noise for about 2 seconds. The noise also happens when the trans shifts from one gear to the next. My dealer keeps telling me that it is coming from the steering gear and it is within specs. My car has 94,000 trouble free miles but this noise is troubling and I would like to have it covered under the 10/100k warrenty if it is the trans. How can I convince my dealer to check the transmission. The fluid was recently changed 5000 miles ago. Thanks

Answer

Hi,how are you this is a transmission problem, where the cv axle inserts into the trans axle the teeth inside of the trans axle is what causes this noise, removing the axle should show markings on the teeth of the axle.If not than the transmission will have to be removed and disassembled to see this.I know this information because i have dealt with this problem many times. As far as convincing the dealer, that will take much persistence and possible threating with legal action,as they are most likely aware of this and do not want to fix it under warranty. Also this problem will get worse and eventually not pull at all.

What would be a good way to approach the dealer with this problem. What can I tell them to have them look into this type of problem and not just blow me off with non powertrain fixes.

Thanks

Hi,really what you are going to need to do is,have another shop check the vehicle out (not fix it),once they determine that this is the problem, have them document it on paper and take this to the dealer. There will be a fee for this but it should not be much, don't let the shop remove the transmission obviously, but see if they can determine otherwise, also i would suggest a transmission shop as oppose to a full mechanic shop.

The dealer can be very difficult to deal with when it comes to costly warranty repairs, and in my opinion they just hope that with enough run around, you will just go away.
