Question

I have a 4 year old St Bernard. He has had ear infections previously, but now has a new issue. He has a bubble on his ear (flap, not inner ear) about the size of a marshmallow. It is warm or hot to the touch, and is a sensitive area for the dog. The rest of his ear (inner) is not red or hot like it would be for an infection. His regular behavior is the same - no noticeable change. Could this be an insect bite? I blister from scratching his ear?

Hi Majoasa, and thanks for your question.

What you're describing on your dog's ear flap is an 'aural hematoma', a collection of serum and/or blood, under the skin. This is typically caused by head shaking and scratching, as you suspected, when an ear infection is present, and causing your dog discomfort.

This condition needs to be treated by the vet, who may aspirate the fluid with a needle, or open the blister surgically, drain the fluid, and suture it. Hopefully, it will heal well, if your dog's ear infections have been resolved, and he's no longer scratching at his ears.

I hope all will be well with your beautiful dog. I love St. Bernards!
