Some critical operating system files seems to be corrupted. Do you have the Windows XP disc ?

If not, do you have any important data in the system ?

I have a gateway recovery disc... but it warns of a total erasing of all files and hard drive... is this my only option. It ahs a lot of info on it I require.

Accepted Answer

There is an option to repair windows, which will basically repair the corrupted files and replace them with proper ones. It will retain your data.

The following link will provide more details

http://www.windowsreinstall.com/winxphome/installxpcdrepair/indexfullpage.htm

Without Windows XP disc, you can try Full System Restore (with Backup) as described in the following link

http://support.gateway.com/s/SOFTWARE/Medialess/MLXPH2/MLXPH2su10.shtml

But I think the best option will be to disconnect the hard drive from the system and connect it to another and then take a backup of the data.

Then reconnect the drive back to the system and use recovery disc to restore the system.

If you do not have another desktop computer, then you can use a hard drive enclosure to connect the drive to another system.

Does the erasing of the hard drive erase all my outlook files???

If you choose Factory restore with backup, it should backup your data, but sometimes this procedure may not be able to save all of your data.

So the safe option is to first backup the data and then use factory restore.
