Question

i was caught shoplifting about a month ago K mart security told me to give back what i took and they wood not call the police so i did and they did'nt call the police but they took me up stairs i signed some papers and gave them my I.D. they made copys and told me not to come back in the store again a week later i get a phone call from a law firm telling me i owe 500.00 for the incident that happen should i pay it.

K-Mart is seeking civil restitution from you which is allowed under state law in cases of shop-lifting.

 

If you did take items from the store without an intent to pay and without permission, then, yes, you are responsible for paying it.

Not for refusing to pay the civil find but they can make a police report and have you criminally charged, prosecuted, etc. Then you would have a record.
