Question

we just found our 16 month old cat dead under my sons desk. He had exhibited no illness and had regular potty habits. The only thing we noticed over the past week is that he was getting pickier with his wet food while still chowing down on the dry food and water. When we got him from our local animal shelter he had all his shot, micro-chipped, and neutered, he was sticktly an indoor cat and got along famously with our two dogs. I know there is no absolute answer but in all my years of having animals we have never experienced this kind of tragedy. Do you have any insight why this would have happened.

Hi,
I am so sorry for the loss of your cat. Any death is hard, but when it is so sudden, with no answers, I think it is even harder.

My best thought is that he had heart disease. Cats, even young cats, can have a heart problem called cardiomyopathy. The heart muscle thickens and doesn't pump very effectively and the cat can die from heart failure with no other clinical signs--not even a heart murmur.

Another possibility could be something like FIP--feline infectious peritonitis, but I would have expected him to not feel well in the period leading up to his death--decreased energy and decreased appetite, especially.

Here is more info on cardiomyopathy: http://www.VeterinaryPartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&A=2420

Please accept my condolences--
