Question

Lost e-mail folders: Following a routine automatic Windows update early in the morning of Nov. 4th, I restarted my computer only to find that all my Windows e-mail folders, containing several years' worth of e-mails, had disappeared. All I see are the generic Inbox, Outbox, etc. When I go to AppData/Local/Microsoft/Windows Mail/Local Folders, there's nothing there (except the generic folders). What happened? Where are my folders?

Answer

Hello,

Thank you for contacting Just Answer.

Next, try the following:

1. Click the Start button, then click Programs, click Accessories, click System Tools, and then click System Restore.
2. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, enter the password or provide confirmation.
3. Click the Restore My Computer To An Earlier Time radio button and click Next.
4. Now on the calendar that appears select the restore point that is at or before the date the issue first occurred and click Next.
5. Click Next again to start the restore process which will include a reboot.

Unfortunately, System Restore (one of the first things I tried)does not affect personal files such as e-mail. Any other ideas?

Just to clarify, you are using Windows Mail correct?

Correct.

Answer

Ok then next select Tools in the Options menu, then click the Advanced tab, and click the Maintenance button. Then make sure the Compact the database on shutdown every [100] runs is checked and change it from 100 to 1, and click OK, then OK again. Then close Windows Mail and when it will offer to compact messages click OK. Then open Windows Mail, go back to the Maintenance area and set the interval back to 100.

Let me know if you can then see the email again.

After I've changed it from 100 runs to 1 run, the options are not "OK" but "Clean Up Now" or "Store Folder." Which do I pick?

Posted by David L 15 days and 8 hours ago.

Answer

Choose Clean Up Now.

Okay. Now I have three options: "Remove Messages," "Delete," and "Reset." Which do I pick?

Answer

First try Reset.

Reset accomplished nothing. What next?

Accepted Answer

Ok then next disable your antivirus software, especially the email scanner, and restart Windows Mail.

If your email does not appear after performing the above then follow the instructions at the link below to fix a corrupted email profile:

My e-mail did appear, but the folders are still missing. I fear this is a waste of time. But thanks for your efforts. I'll hit the Accept button and release the $18.00.
