Answer

Hi,

You can move files just by plugging the remote hard drive into your new windows 7 PC. I am assuming it is a USB drive.

It will show up as a new drive letter in the computer.

By files, I mean photos, word documents, etc...

You CANNOT restore PROGRAMS from a remote hard drive.

By programs, I mean Microsoft Office, antivirus, email programs, games, etc.

These need to be reinstalled and cannot be copied from a backup drive....

Best of success--

Carl

I have already been this route. The usb drive shows up as a new drive J: but when I try to restore the files a message, cannot read bkf files.

Answer

Ok,

.bkf files are files created by a program called ntbackup. This program is the backup program included in xp. It wraps the files all together into a lump and they have to be unwrapped before you can get to them individually.

you should be able to download it here. It doesnt say windows 7 specifically, but it says vista/2008 which are very much the same

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=7DA725E2-8B69-4C65-AFA3-2A53107D54A7&displaylang=en

Here is a tutorial/explanation of sorts. Ntbackup works sort of like winzip, it clumps all the files together.

http://www.slickit.ca/2009/07/running-nt-backup-under-windows-7.html

once it is installed, you should be able to right click on the .bkf file and select open with, and select ntbackup.

or start ntbackup and browse to the .bkf file and open it.

then extract the files from the .bkf file on to your win7 pc

Thanks

I downloaded the program and it is loaded in my download folder but I cannot install it or open it. I click on my backup drive J and try to open the NT backup from it but it is not available.

Accepted Answer

Hi Philip,

you would need to install the program on your windows 7 pc to access the .bkf files.

what is the error you get when trying to install the file?

try going to the downloads folder, right clicking on the downloaded file, and selecting "run as administrator"

If you are not an administrator in windows 7 you will have a problem with many things. here is how to tell if you are

Microsoft Windows 7
  1. Click on the Start button.
  2. Select Control Panel.
  3. Select User Accounts and Family Safety.
  4. Select User Accounts.
  5. On the right of the User Accounts window, you should see your account name, account icon and a description listed.
  6. If the word "Administrator" is in your account's description, then you are an administrator. If you see "Standard user," then you are not and administrator and will need to log in as a different user.
