Question

I have a 1994 galaxy boat with a 4.3 mercruiser engine. I am not getting power to the key but there is power to the trim. Does the power to the key come out of the shifter or somewhere else?

Optional Information

Already Tried:
I have determined there the battery is fully charged, there is power to the trim and it is working fine. I metered the hot lead coming into the ignition switch and found it to be dead.

Answer

Hello,
The power for your ignition switch comes off your large starter terminal then through the on engine circuit breaker(with red push button) through the harness on engine plug in to the ignition switch.

What would be the possibilities why the power is not getting to the ignition switch?

Answer

Ok sure,
First find the red 50 amp circuit breaker, push button, test for voltage both sides if no voltage check wire to starter from breaker. if passing voltage through breaker try wiggle test at engine plug in harness to see if there is a bad connection on the big red wire. You can also check for voltage after the plug on the large red wire.
I'm sure you've checked this but make sure you go straight to the battery for your testing ground lead to avoid any ground troubles.

I'm sorry Mike, but where would the circuit breaker be located. I haven't been able to find it. Also, I have voltage to the starter, but nothing coming out.

Answer

Sure,
The large terminal on the starter acts as a terminal block so if you have voltage there thats good. The circuit breaker will be (I think)on the starboard front ahead of the exhaust manifold mounted to the same bracket as the starter solenoid. There will be a red button(size of a pencil eraser)with a 50 printed on the circuit breaker..

Okay, last question. Since there is no voltage exiting the starter, does the starter need to be replaced?

Answer

Can you clarify what you mean when you say starter has voltage in but no voltage out?

The large positive cable from the battery goes directly to the starter. Then there are wires that go from the starter to other areas. None of these wires have current. Should they?

Answer

We only care about the wires coming of the large terminal.Do they all 12 volts? One of these go to the circuit breaker.

There is no voltage in any of the wires coming out of the terminal

Answer

Check the wire from the battery to the sarter terminal then.

It has voltage.

Answer

I thought you said there is no voltage in any of the wires coming out of the large terminal?

Reply

There is voltage for the battery to the starter, but not from the starter out.

Answer

Ok seems like we are running around in circles here.If you have it ti the starter you have it out because the large terminal where there are two or three wires hooked up together on one is the out. Did you find the circuit breaker?

Okay, there is a red, orange, and yellow wire coming out of the starter. I know this sounds crazy, but there is no voltage in either of them, but there is voltage coming to the starter through the main positive cable.

Accepted Answer

There is not supose to be on your year model, but is there a square fuse block mounted there as well. if so the fuse may be blown if not remove wires and clean with sandpaper.
