Can you confirm what oral medication your husband has been given in this time?
The mastoid sinus cavities do connect with the middle ear and can certainly be linked to his symptoms. With possible infection in areas with poor blood supply then he may need additional courses of antibiotics if the fluid was thought to be pus rather than serous fluid. The other thing that may possibly help is a decongestant tablet such as pseudoephedrine.
Obviously he needs to return to ENT for complete review of his symptoms. Examination of his hearing should be able to distinguish between a conduction type hearing loss and nerve related. If the nerve has been damaged then the hearing may not fully recover.
Surgery would be a last resort to open up the sinus, but often people with fluid in the mastoid sinus are given intravenous antibiotics or watchful waiting.
Pauline, is this a serious situation where he may accumulate alot of fluid and it cause other paroblems? The dizziness is very annoying and keeping him from doing things he normally does, and also he has more headaches around his lef eye. The hearing test he had showed he had lost hearing in his left ear due to the nerve damage so he is going to get a hearing aid but wants to wait until this other situation is resolved.
Do you have any idea where the fluid is coming from?
I don't have the MRI report in front of me but the doctors office called yesterday and said it read, " fluid in the left mastoid sinus cavity". Thats all I really know at this point. Does that help?
