Question

I live abroad and have not filed taxes for the past 9-10 years. I want to get this taken care of and get in compliance. But i have no idea how to go about this. i have not earned over the $80,000 exemption for my entire time outside of the USA. How can i find out what years i have not filed and get them taken care of? I will also need to renew my passport soon so need to get it done quickly. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Answer

You need to file the tax returns ASAP. You can claim the foreign earned income exclusion and may not have any tax liability.

You can request a tax account transcript from the IRS by calling 1-800-829-1040 and ask them to fax it to you. This will provide you the required information on the taxes filed, if any.

thats half of it answer.. then how do i go about actually filing? how can i be certain that once i file i can in fact renew my passport?

Accepted Answer

You need to file for each of the tax years. You can either download the tax forms from the IRS at www.irs.gov or engage a tax professional to prepare it for you.

If filed tax return is required for renewing the passport than you should be able to renew your passport. IRS will update your records with the filed tax return which can be retrieved by the authorities. This may take 8-12 weeks after you file.
