Question

I have two Evinrude 6 HR 1979 model 6904E out board moters. They are NEW never been started never been in the water. They don't have a scratch on them. They were suposed to be part of a training program at a VO- TEC school that didn't happen. One moter is assembled and the other is in large pieces with a parts kit for assembly, gasket screws etc. My question is where can I get an assembly manual to put the motor together. Second question. Are there some parts I should change, because of their age, like the impeller or hoses or gaskets, before I try to start them? Also where can I get the parts? Is there anything else I should know of look for before I start putting them together? Thank you Gary Dillon

Hello,
Starting with your last questions first, Crowley Marine . com would be a good on line source for your Picture beak downs and part numbers for your motor. Much of these you will still find available through your OMC dealer.
There are many after market marine companies supplying the more frequently replaced parts for that engine as well. Sierra Marine comes to mind. You can locate them as well with an internet search Sierra marine.com .
I don't know of any assembly manuals available for that motor, although a non OEM service manual would be a good way to go as it will get into more explanation of procedures with pictures. Amazon is a good source for these http://www.amazon.com/Johnson-Evinrude-Outboards-Cylinders-Outboard/dp/089330008X/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1257440205&sr=8-9
You need to change out the water pump impeller and rubber fuel hoses if hard. Fuel pump are a bit spendy so I would test run the engines after the water pump replacement and gear oil check. Also grease the zerks at the steering and tilt tubes.
As you say these have never been run you need to run a double oil mixture for the first tank full 25/1 which is a pint to 3 gallons or quart to 6.
When you start assembling the one motor take a parts inventory against the parts found at Crowley Marine so you'll know before you start if there are any missing parts needed to order. Closely inspect any rubber components, if they are still soft and pliable they should be fine. The Manual will also give you the proper lubricants for assembly.

Best of luck!
