Question

I am a 60 yr old, wh. female. Very fit, good diet, active, non-smoker, social drinker. I was diagnosed with shingles and am at day 10 of a 14 day Rx of acyclovir 400mg/TID. Minimal rash right side from mid back to side; which is responding very well to Rx. However, I have severe pain in mid spine and right chest which is much worse when reclining. Especially bad in early am.before rising. I have been taking 800mg ibuprofen every 4 hrs., which helped very much w/ skin discomfort, but is not helping at all with back and chest pain. My bp is 154/90 left arm, 157/82 left. Generally it runs in mid 140s over 75 -85. I do have Mit.valve prolapse. Can shingles cause muscle or bone pain? Are my symptoms coincidental/unrelated?

Hi and thank you for your question. I am sorry you are having this pain.This might be caused by irritation of some of the nerves that control the muscle tone in the area of the shingles. Your blood pressure is of concern as it is Very high. It is possible acyclovir can cause kidney problems leading to dehydration, the dehydration can cause an incrase in blood pressure. I think you should call your Dr and make an appointment to see him so he can assess your blood pressure. You may need to be on antihypertensive medication.
