Hello,
I understand your concern, there is alot of differing opinions floating around. I have had two patients very healthy be on the ventilators from this. One was 18 and the other was 35. The 18 year old pulled thru by a miracle but after 6 days on the vent. the 35 yo was not so fortunate. So sometimes it is difficult for me to say not to get the H1N1 vaccine. They were both healthy and no underlying conditions!
What I keep in mind is underlying conditions or work situations. I personally took the vaccine because I have 4 children 5 and under at home and I work in an Urgent Care where I am very exposed. If your son has asthma I would recommend the injection for him. We know that if he contracts it the potential could be worse for him.
If I was in my 50-60's and did not have young children at home, I don't know that I would take it. I truely am seeing patients in our area have all been in theirs 40's and below. The teens and young children are sicker than the few adults that I have seen.
I know the CDC is saying all health care professionals but I would think you also have to consider your age, other risk factors and who you live with. That is my opinion.
I hope that I have helped to answer your questions.
