Question

I noticed a fairly severe rash on my 1-yr old German Shepherd female 2 days ago. She is in top-notch health otherwise and has never had any visible skin allergies in the last year. I recently switched her food about 3 weeks ago to Blue Buffalo Large Breed Adult dry food (main ingredients listed first on the label are Deboned Chicken, Chicken Meal, Whole Ground Brown Rice, Whole Ground Barley). Again the rash just appeared this week so I'm not convinced it is an allergy to food but could be wrong. She has not had any recent vaccinations or exposure to unusual elements. She lives indoors and receives a monthly dose of Frontline Plus (which she has never had an adverse reaction to, been on it since a puppy). Location of rash: stomach, inner back legs, and lower back legs Appearance: red and splotchy/ more severe on stomach vs legs; not flaky or oozing Itching: ocassionally biting on lower & inner legs & hind quarters/lower back (not really the stomach at all

Info Request

What was the previous food being fed?

Is she near the time when the Frontline needs to be renewed?

Has she any new dog beds?

Did you put down anything new for chemicals or mulch in the yard?

Hi Nancy, thanks for the response. To answer your questions:

Previous food - ROYAL CANIN Veterinary Diet® canine OSTEO & DIGEST ODTM 23 LARGE BREED ADULT dry

Frontline was last administered about 3 weeks ago

No new beds and her usual one has not been exposed to anything unusual (although it is due for a washing)

No new changes to the yard

I also forgot to mention that she receives an additional 1000mg of fish oil with her food daily. She's been on that for about 2 months w/ no noticed side effects.

The thing to do is cross check ingredients between the two foods.

The Royal Canin ingredients list can be found here

http://tinyurl.com/yl8pg67

"Ingredients:

ROYAL CANIN Veterinary Diet® canine OSTEO & DIGEST ODTM 23 LARGE BREED ADULT dryChicken meal, rice, brown rice, chicken fat, wheat gluten, barley, oatmeal, natural flavors, dried beet pulp (sugar removed), anchovy oil (source of EPA/DHA), soya oil, sodium silico aluminate, dried brewers yeast, potassium chloride, psyllium seed husk, dried egg product, ..."

So it doesn't look like its new ingredients in the new food that are an issue. Dogs do typically react to ingredients they are exposed to all the time but she is a bit young for food allergies to show.

If her bed is a cedar bed some dogs react poorly to cedar oils.

If you are using a new carpet cleaner or floor cleaner that could cause something like this too.

I am hearing from some people that Frontline is not working as well as usual with this years crop of fleas and ticks in some areas. It may be you are dealing with a tick carried disease, or a reaction to a flea bite.

What you describe could be allergies but it might also be something such as mange mites which you can read about here

Or a skin infection with ringworm

or a bacterial skin infection

You can read about allergies and dermatitis in dogs here

You can try a Chlorhexiderm shampoo from the pet supply store in case the problem is a bacterial skin infection. Malaseb is another good one to eliminate yeast from the skin. Follow directions on the bottles if you try one.

Dogs can have low thyroid level issues and that can trigger skin allergies. The vet can check for that with a blood test.

You can also try cleaning the areas with Betadine iodine solution and applying some plain Neosporin or Triple Antibiotic ointment to the sore spots to see if that clears them up.

But I'd suggest a vet visit to have the area checked for mites or fungus and to see if you need oral antibiotics to clear this up.

Hope this helps you!
