Question

I have a Maxtor OneTouch external drive (S/N FA204WHU). I have been using it for more than a year and now my computer has died. I have a new Toshiba laptop running Windows 7 O/S and want to hook it up to the Maxtor. I can't find any disc that I hmight have to load in order to use it. I have tried to just connect it to the computer but it doesn't seem to recognise it. Can you tell me if "I need to download something to get the drive communicating with my new laptop? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. Carl Verderber XXXXX@XXXXXX.XXX

Hi Carl,

You shouldn't need any additional software to run this drive.

Can you press the Windows Key + R
Type in: diskmgmt.msc
Press Ok

Does this screen list your drive there?

I went to diskmgmt.msc and I saw the drive there but it is asking me to initialize it. Using partition style "MBR (Master Reboot Record" I hit OK and a box pops up with the following X The media is write protected and I hit OK and nothing happens. The drive does have a password protection. What's the next move?

Do you have important data on the drive that you need, or can we format it?

Reply

Yes I do. It is my backup for the now dead old computer that i just replaced. I can't have its contents damaged.

What program did you set it up to be password protected with?

Reply

The drive itself is password protected.

Where did you set the password? Which program?

Reply

When I first used the external drive it asked if I wanted to have the drive password protected. When it was working with the old PC, each time I turned on the drive it would ask for a password. When I entered the pw it would open the drive so I could access the files.

Ok, no problem. Is this a Onetouch 1, 2, 3, or 4 drive?

I believe it is a III model with 200GB

Accepted Answer

Check this page out, and download the Backup software and then open it. See if it recognises the drive. You can also download Seatools on that page which is a diagnostic.

Let me know if that works, thanks!
