Question

I upgraded my X31 laptop from Ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10; I also did a clean install of 9.10. In both cases, I got a scrambled desktop, windows that were too sluggish at resize and close commands and at least one Kernel error. Not usable. I tried 9.10 on an HP Pavilion and had no similar problems. Any idea what the problem could be on X31? It has 1.5GB of RAM.

Clean installation from a distribution CDROM of Ubuntu on a Lenovo X31 with 1.5 GB of RAM completed but the result was a scrambled screen that could not be cleaned, windows that could not be controlled (even closed) and finally a Kernel error. Similar clean. The results were exactly the same on a previous attempt on the same machine to upgrade from 9.04 (which was working fine for months) to 9.10. What should I do next?

Accepted Answer

do a clean install of 9.04 again. sounds like there is a driver issue with the 9.10 and the particular machine you are trying to use. a bios upgrade on the machine MIGHT help. just might though.

try downloading the cd image again. quite possible a file has gotten corrupted.

it also recomends upgrading from 9.04 rather than the clean install although in general i agree that clean installs will usually give less problems. but then thats windows not ubuntu

The answer corroborates my suspicion about a driver problem and sounds plausible
