Question

I bought a 1999 evinrude 9.9 4-stroke this spring. I runs great for short time (15 min to 1 hour) then starts sounding rough and quits. I let it sit 20 minutes or so and then it will be ok for a while. The guy I got it from fixes boats and been trying to fix it. He said timing was 180 out then fixed and put on new belt. Tried ignition coil, cleaned carb then finally put new carb on. He said he replaced magnitos before I bought it. After all this the motor will still quit after running good for a while. I do notice some oil leaking down engine after days it runs more. Any ideals? thanks

Hello,

There's been allot of parts thrown at this motor already. I don't understand how a timing belt can be 180 off but I'm not there.

So if you haven't already try a new oil pressure switch it's an inexpensive part in comparison to the rest. OMC part number is XXXXXXX and is under 25.00. Easy to find, port side, screwed into engine block by oil filter.

If that doesn't do it,it's time to do some trouble shooting.
Try squeezing primer bulb as engine is dieing to see if it will recover. If not see if spraying a carburetor cleaner into the carb will try to keep it running. If neither of these things help it's probably and electrical problem unless the engine is flooding.Next thing to do when engine dies is to check spark, maybe you have a timing light you can use.
Best of luck!

If the oil pressure switch is bad (maybe even a bad connection) will that shut down the engine? It seems when I troll faster (2.5 mph) instead of 1.2mph, the motor runs longer and sometimes runs fine for a 3 hour fishing trip.

If I try your troubleshooting tips and problem is electrical what else is let after magnito, coil, and plugs. I realize a bad connection could be an issue but is there a spark unit like a cdi on a car?

On the timing belt I think it was a gear 180 off. The motor was taken taken apart by somebody before they traded it to the guy I bought it from.

We are getting freezing temps in Michigan now this will be my last reply and I will accept your advise. I really like that oil switch possiblity. Thank you very much

Answer

Yup getting cold here in MN too.
Yes the oil switch connects directly to the power pack to shut down the engine in case of no oil pressure.
I figured someone must have been monkeying around on the motor for the belt to be off.
Stator, Ignition module, coil, spark plugs and stop circuit switch are what compile the ignition on your model. Ign module could be at fault but I wouldn't rush to judgment as of yet.
