Question

After the birth of my first daughter, I decided to go ahead with an IUD. In the he first year of our marrige my husband approached me and showed me his genatalia and told me that I had given him an infection, and that I should get treated as well, since he was already getting a penacilin treatment At the same time I noticed the colour of my vagina was of pale lilac colour with round sores with a slight swelling. His symptoms were the same. At that point in time all I can honestly say is that I was very naive!!! I assumed that the infection came from the IUD. The thought never crossed my mind at the possability of him being unfaithful. So off I went to my obstetrician Dr Mobbs - I didn't ask any questions and told him to please remove my IUD since it has caused the infection in me and my husband. Dr Mobbs removed the IUD and said nothing regarding the infection. This was 32 years ago - just had blood test done fof syphils and came back negative. Could this be some other form of STD

Well, here is what I can tell you, then.

The IUD itself did not cause you to get syphilis.
It is a sexually transmitted disease, not transmitted by the IUD itself.
Typically, the symptoms of an initial infection with syphilis will be one single, painless ulcer in the genital area.
If that ulcer is missed and syphilis progresses, the next stage is a rash along with the development of gray/white patches in the genital area or mouth (not everyone gets these). So this may be the stage at which you were diagnosed given the description you have given above.

Penicillin is the treatment for syphilis, as you and your husband were given.

Many people will, after treatment and many years later, will become non-reactive in testing for syphilis. So you may be one of those people who now test negative following successful treatment 32 years ago.

Let me know if you have any follow up questions.

Just quickly;

During marrige there was an underlying feeling that my husband was a homosexsual.

After he passed away 2 years ago I found some information etc that is supporting my suspicion of his sexual orientation. Having done some research myself I foud out that syphalis is linked to homosexuality, that is why I asked my GP for a blood test.

At present Im seeing my Simone Serg my Psychologist.

I am sorry to hear about that. That can be very devastating news to find out.

Syphilis does occur in both the heterosexual and homosexual population so I would not say that the fact that he had it confirms that he was homosexual per se.

I am glad you are finding support through a psychologist. And hopefully are realizing that you had nothing to do with your husband's orientation.

Early this year I have been in touch with Dr Mobbs in regards to this matter a have also asked him for my files, but was unble to provide them since they only go back 25 years. However that should not be the case since my last child was born in November 85.

How can I access my files from Dr Mobbs?

I also need a print out of my correspondance with you, as I'm seeing my Psychologist. Simone Serg.

Kind regards

Answer

Well, physicians only are required to keep records for 5 years so it is not unusual for him to not have your records any longer.
If he tested you for syphilis, the health department in your state may have a record of a positive test so you can try contacting them.

As far as printing out a copy of this, you can try copying and pasting this to another page and printing. If you have trouble printing, you can look for information as to how to print under the help section for customers (link is at the bottom of the page).

Take care,

Dr Abby
