Answer

Hello,

I'm so sorry to hear this sad news about the loss of your dog's litter. From your descriptions of her symptoms, she most likely has an infection in her system, and you are doing the right thing is wiping her down with cool towels, to help lower the fever, but she really needs to be evaluated by a vet, in person, to get a definite diagnosis and then, be treated.

Your dog's body has been through a trauma, and she will need antibiotics and other medications determined by the vet, to help her recover from this trauma, and regain her health.

I hope you are able to have her seen immediately, by your regular vet or an ER vet center, if it's now after hours for you.

I hope all will be well with your dog, once she's treated appropriately by the vet.

I did take her to our vet. He gave her a shot and has given medication as well which I am giving her. I am sorry I should have mentioned this. But we are a wroking family and I am at work even now. My son happens to be home - but if he is out of sight she cries - and my male Shitzu Coco also gets upset when Lulu cries. She is not eating anything. I dont want to lose my baby - will she be okay? The medicine is for 5 days. What can I do to make it better - what can I feed her - shall I take her for walks , a drive?

Please I am so worried and so are my kids

Hello again, and thanks for your reply with additional information.

I'm very glad to hear Lulu has already been to the vet and is taking medication.

You can dropper feed her watered down canned dog food or plain jarred baby food chicken which contains no onion product or seasonings, with a 1cc sized dropper, every 15 minutes for an hour, then repeat in 2-3 hours. This will help get some nutrition into her and she shouldn't be taking medication on an empty stomach.

If taking her for walks or drives seems to calm her, definitely try that. When you or any family members are home, continue to do what you're doing, and give her lots of TLC and attention. Place an old unwashed t shirt of yours or your son's in Lulu's bed, so she has your scent near, and this might help her feel less anxious. Also, you can try a dog appeasing pheromone called DAP, sold in major pet supply stores and online.

When you're working, if she's home alone, ask a neighbor, friend, relative, if they can stop by to check on her and give her some company for a short while.

Hopefully, the medication will help her feel better and you should see an improvement, soon. if she still is not interested in eating, and she is not diabetic, offer her some Nutri-Cal or Nutri-Stat, a nutritional supplement which provides extra calories and energy to dogs who are not eating at all, or properly.

I hope Lulu is feeling back to herself, very soon!
