Question

I had an EGD/EUS today. My ears and throat are EXTREMELY sore. I noticed that my Uvula is BRIGHT RED. Does anyone know what may have happened during this type of procedure?

Answer

Hello,
As such sore throat is the common symptom resulted after the procedure of EGD which may last up to 24 hours to few days.
Anesthetic throat lozenges, such as Cepacol or Sucrets, may be helpful.
Redness of Uvula can be resulted due to irritation from the contact of scope(instrument).
If your symptoms 'll persist and there 'll be associated vomting , fever, abdominal pain, blood in stool and other symptoms then you need to be seen by a doctor .
I hope this helps.

The Uvula looks like it was caught in a suction vacuum...it is such a bright red it looks like half of it is going to fall off when it heals. Also, how about the extreme pain in the ears? My throat itself looks fine, NO redness. It seems like all the pain is coming from the Uvula, is that sensitive that friction alone could have caused so much apparent damage? Other than a reflex mechanism for gagging, what else does the Uvula do? Is there a specific purpose in relation to the ears?

Answer

Hello,
As such there may be possibility of Uvula injury /necrosis in your case occur after upper endoscopy.
it may be resulted due to impingement of the uvula by the instrument against the hard palate or posterior pharynx or may be result of aggressive oropharyngeal suctioning.
It can also be associated with sore throat as well.
You can take OTC anti inflammatory Motrin as well.

Apart from this ear pain can be referred one related to soreness of throat .

I suggest you to consult your doctor for further evaluation and management.

I will be communicating these concerns with my doctor, I just wanted to go to him with some logical possibilities. As far as the Motrin, I've taken (4) Oxycodone-APAP S-325mg. tablets in the passed 10 hours...that hasn't given relief, but I'm sure it would be a lot worse if I had taken nothing or was left at the mercy of OTC. I was fortunate to have the Oxycodone because my regular doctor gave me the prescription because I was in so much pain from my pancreas. The doctor who did the endoscopy doesn't like to prescribe pain killers. Meanwhile, I'm sitting here with a heating pad wrapped around my neck, unable to sleep, most anelgesics have the opposite effect on me, except for morphene that lets me sleep and kills the pain. But I shouldn't even have to think of a drug that strong for an endoscopy procedure. I've had upper & lower GI's in the past, never knew anyone was there. Guess today just wasn't my lucky day!

Thank you anyway for your input.

Hello,
As you describe it is advised to undergo a clinical examination by your doctor to rule out Uvula injury .
Apart from this as you have already taken Oxycodone(opioid analgesic) but your pain is not relieving so it is advised not to take any other OTC or self medications as per your history of GI bleed in past.
I suggest you to consult your doctor ASAP for further evaluation and management.
I hope this helps.
