Hello. Thanks for writing in. The licking could be due to something that embedded into the paw, injury to the paw, insect bite, infection, boredom or attention getting behavior. Check him to make sure he is not limpong on t limb. If there is any redness, swelling or sores on the paw; have it checked out by your vet tomorrow. If it looks normal, you can continue to monitor him. He may stop licking on it. You can try spraying it with Bitter Apple, but if he continues to licking on it, despite the reason, it will most likely get infected. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Hope this helps.

It sounds like it is getting infected. I would recommend one of 2 things at this point. If you a coned shaped Elizabethan collar for him, you can put that on to keep him from licking. If you don't have that, you can try putting a sock over the paw, but my guess is that a puppy would most likely try and take that off. If is work a shot, though. If you have some Epson salts, you can soak the paw for 5-10 minutes. That may help. The initial injury may have just been a mild abrasion that got worse from him licking it. Some dogs will lick out of boredom or anxiety and cause the infection. I forgot to mention it, but with a puppy, demodectic mange is very likely. Either way, have your vet take a look at it tomorrow. I have used 1mg per pound of body weight of Benedryl to help with inflammation and hopefully make them sleep, so they don't lick anymore. Hope this helps.
