Question

Hi I woke up Sunday night with severe abdominal pain...then was constipated for half the next day, couldn't eat, experienced multiple bowel movements (normal, not diarhea or constipated). Have felt better each day, but am experiencing sharp pain tonight in adbomen after eating. Take Prilosec daily for bad acid reflux. Had an endoscopy two years ago that showed some inflamation/narrowing of esophogus related to acid reflux. Biopsy was negative. Any thoughts? Could Prilosec be masking a more serious issue -- esophogeal cancer? Thanks for any response.

Hi Dr. RK,

Thanks for replying.

I take Prilosec daily. One pill per day. Occasional Tums.

Pain is occasional -- though now is througout adbomen -- sharp and worse when I press on it.

No fever or vomitting, diarrhea.

Accepted Answer

Dear zona,

Thank you for the information,

The drug like prilosec may cause abdomen pain, diarrhea and such symptoms as the side effect on long term use.It may be the cause of such symptoms.

Since you are already diagnosed a case of reflux esophagitis so it may also be the likley cause of your symptoms. The gastro duodenal ulcer may be there as well which is causing such severe abdomen pain in you.

The other causes of such abdomen pain should also be ruled out like colitis, mesentric lymphadenitis, gall bladder stones, cholecystitis, pancreatitis , gastroenteritis, constipation etc. which may also cause such symptoms of pain.

Meanwhile you may take the pain killers to ease your symptoms along with prilosec. The antibiotics may be prescribed for the infectious etiology.

You should have the relevant investigations done like endoscopy, ct scan abdomen, serum amylase, lipase, blood counts, etc. after consulting your doctor to know the associated abnormality if the symptoms are severe and not controlled.

The treatment depends on the underlying cause.

Let me know if you have any doubt.

Thank you!
