Question

Hello, I have been diagnosed with serve Ulnar nueropathy (left arm) and a possible peripheral nerve disorder. I have Cerebral Palsy--my PCP is trying to find out if there is any connection. But, I forgot to mention that about a year ago, I had a very serious MRSA staph infection in my right arm--could the current nerve damage and muscle wasting that is occurring in any way be related to that?

Hello; Thank you for writing in today. I want to provide you with the best possible information, so I do have a few questions. I hope you understand. Do you have any issues with your left elbow, such as arthritis, history of trauma or fracture, or other issues? Any other significant history, such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome or Cervical (Neck) problems? Also, have you had any testing, such as ultrasound, scans, or nerve conduction study? Please let me know. Due to C.P. I have athritis in all joints--which I am assuming would include the left arm/elbow area. I was told that there are presentations of carpral tunnel in both hands.
No tramas or fractures that I know of...

I have had the following tests on my nerves/muscles for the upper-body, lower body has still not been completed...

-NCV
-EMG
-C-spine x-ray
Both tests (emg and ncv) showed a severe amount of muscle wasting and nerve damge to my left side
C-spine came back "clear"

Hello; Thank you for responding to the questions. I am doubtful that this has anything at all to do with your previous MRSA infection. I am especially doubtful since the infection occurred on the contralateral side. Based on your history, I would suspect that you may have some impingement of the ulnar nerve. Generally, this is caused by a trauma or disease, such as arthritis. Since you have arthritis in all your joints, this is one possibility. Also, given your history of cerebral palsy, spasms can actually cause ulnar nerve impingement problems too. As for other concerns, such as nervous system lesions and cervical spine issues, it sounds like these have essentially been ruled out. Finally, if they can't pinpoint the a cause, it may be ruled idiopathic. This essentially means that the cause is unknown. Unfortunately, why a person develops ulnar neuropathy and atrophy is not always know. If you have any additional questions, concerns, or need clarification, please let me know. Lisa
