Answer

on the screen where is you must click your user and enter the password, hit CTRL+Alt+DEL twice and you will see a box to type in a username. In the username field, type administrator, and leave the password field empty and log in and see if that works.

Thanks,

I typed in what you said and got the logon message, "unable to log you on because of an account restriction" . what does that mean?

Answer

Try and log on to the computer using safe mode. To access safe mode, restart your computer, and as soon as the computer comes back on from shutting down, continually press the F8 key until an option menu pops up. Use the arrow keys on the keyboard to select safe mode.

Log on to the computer using the administrator account again, then follow these instructions for setting a password for this account and again for your regular user account.

  • Click Start, click Settings, click Control Panel, and then click User Accounts.
  • Click the Administrator icon.
  • Click Create a Password or Change my password.
  • Type a password for the account, and then retype the password to confirm it.
  • Type a hint to help you remember the password in the event that you forget it.
  • Click Create Password or Change Password.
  •

    Thanks,

still no luck in safe mode. I get a welcome page with administrator and owner icons. clicking on administrator just saves my settings and goes back to the same welcome page to do it all again

    Answer

It appears that whatever update installed on the computer is conflicting with your configuration. You will have to repair your operating system. Here are instructions for repairing your OS.

    1. Put your XP cd into the cd rom drive and restart your computer.
    2. When your computer asks to press any key to boot from the cd, press the enter key.
    3. After setup finishes loading files, it will say " to setup windows xp, press enter"
    4. Press the enter key
    5. Accept the license agreement by hitting F8
    6. Hightlight your windows xp installation and hit the R key
    7. After setup copies files your computer will reboot
    8. DO NOT BOOT FROM THE CD AGAIN. LET YOUR COMPUTER BOOT BY ITSELF.
    9. Let your computer finish doing it thing. Answer any prompts that come up on the screen.
    10. After everything is done, you will be able to log on to the computer again. All of your files and settings should still be intact.

    Thanks,

I cant find the xp disc, i think it came pre loaded. any thing else?

    Accepted Answer

It was probably preloaded, but you should have still received your xp disc. If you can't find it, you need to contact the computer company ie. Dell, HP, etc. and get another one.

    Thanks,
