Question

I moved to Pennsylvania from New York 4 years ago. My son was 9 and in the third grade when we moved. He is now 12 and in the 7th grade. I have been having problems with the intermediate school he is in since last year. Since starting this school my son has been labeled a disruptive child, we never had this problem before, the teachers have mentioned to me how the children coming from NY all have difficulty adapting to this school system. I never understood this. My son was in honors classes in NY, he has always tested advanced in math and on the high side of proficient in reading and writing in the State exams in both NY and PA. The only class my son has struggled in has been Language arts and reading. It so happens that these are the teachers that have voiced the problem with NY children. Now they have transferred him to a special ed class. I am worried about the stigma this will be placed on my son. What rights do I have to stop them. His overall average is 78%.

Accepted Answer

Thanks for your question. This may be an advantage here because he may qualify for additional assistance with language arts and reading.Certainly you can continue to voice your concerns and make sure they try to meet his additional needs. You may need to consider extra tutoring here to get him back to where he is here.I understand that its frustrating but don't give up here.

I have three kids that all had learning disabilities and actually in a lot of ways the label here helped themThey received extra services and also modification when needed here.I hope that you can make use of things like this as well. One of them has an MBA now.
