Question

31 yo Caucasian male, overall good health. Developed flu-like symptoms about a week ago. Temp got as high as 103 for a night, then after severe sweating (soaked the bedsheets), worst symptoms broke. I feel pretty good overall, but this sore throat just will not go away. Upon waking, I can barely swallow food or liquid, and salt water gargles, cough drops, and essential oil vaporizers help, but only briefly. Have a dry, deep cough that sometimes produces a dark, speckled sputum. Minor sinus blockage still with a little drainage from time to time, but it's more of a nuisance than anything. Trying the whole DayQuil/NyQuil thing, but again, little relief. Any suggestions to rid myself of this miserable sore throat will be appreciated. Oh, and since I have a sneaking suspicion, I do still have my tonsils.

Hello

Sounds like you did have Influenza with the high fever. Sometimes, secondary bacterial infections can result from viral infections can result from Influenza such as Pneumonia or Bronchitis. Your dry cough that produces a dark colored sputum is indicative of such. Also, your throat being sore is most likely from the bacteria in your upper respiratory system that is still present...or something altogether different like a Strep infection or even Mono.

Most likely you are going to need antibiotics and a steriod injection to help clear your airway and bring relief to your throat. The steriod injection will help with the throat pain and also give you some energy.

Your Dr might also prescribe something called Magic Mouthwash for you to swish and swallow. This concoction contains a mixture of Maalox, Benedryl, and Viscous Xylocaine. Since it contains the Xylocaine, it is prescription only but it will bring immediate relief to your throat.

Expect a chest xray when you go and also possibly some blood to be drawn so the Dr can see what your white blood cell count looks like.

Sounds like you have exhausted all means of 'at home' measure, so, it is most likely time to let your Dr take a look. If you don't have a regular Dr, you can always use a walk in clinic or urgent care. They will be happy to treat you.

Hope you feel better soon!
