Question

I am a 29 year old male w/no known medical problems. I have been having slight shortness of breath, like I have to take in deep breaths occasionaly to breath right. I have slight discomfort in my chest and feel like my heart is beating hard from time to time. In the past few days I have felt light- headed from time to time but no nausea. In the past week, I have felt as if I was getting a cold, or sick. Nose almost always runs. I dont sleep well and switch twice a week from night shift to day shift at work. I wonder if this is stress related or something else?

Hello and thanks for the reply

The feelings you are describing as your heart 'beating hard at time' is most likely due to stress, lack of sleep/change in sleep patterns, and the caffeine consumption. Heart palpitations can occur with any of these precipitating factors. However, an EKG would be most helpful in determining if you are having any abnormal heart rhythms that would need addressed. Your Dr might also put on a 24 hour heart monitor as well to capture any fast heartbeats that you might be feeling as well. By wearing a heart monitor, you will be given a button to push on the monitor for when you feel something 'strange'. This marks the recording with a symbol that you have felt something strange and when the Dr reviews the activity, he/she can see where you have made 'marks' and then correlate with what they see and make a decision on what might be going on. The holter monitor is very useful in determining lots of things. The lightheadedness can also be caused by an abnormal rhythm. As you know, when the heart is not an effective pump of blood, the availale of O2 is decreased and even a slight decrease can be interpreted by the patient as a 'faint' feeling or dizziness or lightheadedness.

Also, you nasal symptoms in the past week could just be a viral illness or cold that might be going around as there is a lot of upper respiratory illness going on right now.

Until you find out what is going on with the heart beats, I would try to leave off the caffeine and any cough and cold preparations as this will make the symptoms worse. Also try to get as much sleep as possible and drink lots of water.

Feel free to update me whenever you decide to get these test done and let me know what is found out.

Hope this helps!
