Question

My 7 month old Golden Retriever has been to the vet this weekend. We brought him in because he was not sleeping through the night due to bad diarrhea. He threw up a two times in a week, but mainly it was the mucousy feces. The vet tested for Parvo, which was negative. He had no fever, and has had a normal temperment. The vet took X-Rays, and did not see any major signs for concern. Per the vets directions, we have him on an anti-biotic (Metronizadole). We also have him eating rice and chicken, in small doses throughout the day. He eats everything he gets, and is really hungry after. We still notice mucousy poop, and he threw up last night again. He does not have any diarrhea, though, as he has been on a limited diet and does not go to the bathroom much. I'm concerned that he's still going to be having bowel issues afterwards. What would you recommend are our next steps?

How is he feeling at this point? Back to being a rambunctious Golden puppy?

Thanks!

Yeah, he never acted strangely. He was always wanting to play and starving when we got him on the simple diet. He feels ok, I would say. The vet just said that even though he may show signs of being ok, that he would need some invasive surgery to investigate his insides to look for things that the X-Ray didn't pick up. This is an expensive procedure, and we weren't convinced that Steve needed this just yet.

I don't think I would jump to an exploratory laparotomy just yet, either.

I would probably try one of the "intestinal" canine diets that are available from your vet (Hills Canine I/D or Purina Canine EN are two I can name). They are designed to be easy to digest and good for dogs with intestinal issues, and also have the vitamins and minerals that your puppy needs to grow. You might also find a "sensitive stomach" diet at the pet store may work for your puppy as well.

If the signs continued longterm (for example 2 to 3 months, and diet change did not help them) then, yes, the exploratory could help determine the cause of the problem. Biopsy samples of the organs could be taken during the surgery and sent for testing.

Good luck!
