Question

My mom has a history of breast cancer. She has been having pain in her lower back and at times, is unable to walk due to a weakened leg. She had an MRI with contrast on Sunday. Today, her neurologist said from the MRI that there were multiple "lesions" on the brain and on the cauda equina. He suggested she see an oncologist. Does this mean that it is definitelty cancer? Or, could it be something else, such as MS? What other symptoms would she be having if was cancer?

Answer

Hi and thank you for your question. I am sorry you are experiencing this concern and having to wait to talk to an Oncologist to find out what is going on. I will try my best to help you. The cauda equina is a bundle of nerves in the lumbar spine area , any kind of compression or inflammation in the cauda eqina will produce symptoms of pain, decreased feeling in a particular area, as well as decreased strength. Has she had any weight loss?

Yes, she has lost about 15 pounds since the end of Sept and about 5 since two weeks ago, our first ER visit.

While we can not give you a diagnosis at Just Answer, your information provided is consistent with what the Neurologist suspects and I must advise you that an immediate follow up with her Oncologist is necessary. While Cauda Equina syndrome is sometimes seen with MS, her history of breast cancer along with newly discovered brain lesions unfortunately do point to a possible metastasis ( spread of cancer) . I hope that this isn't the case. I will keep her in my thoughts and prayers.
