Question

do any of you know anything about fish? My goldfish isnt swimming around alot, he mostly just kinda lays on the bottom. sometimes it looks like hes gasping for air or something. but when he swims, he swims upside down or on his side and when he's laying on the bottom of the tank he lays upside down. Please don't laugh because i'm asking about my goldfish! I have 6 of them, but he's my favorite and the only one I really worry about him living or not.

Hi XXXXXXXXXXXXXX

I'm Dr. Kris.

It sounds like your fish has swimbladder problems. The swim bladder enables buoyancy in fish and there are several factors that contribute to this disease. I'm going to give you a few links and you can read about this problem. To treat it you can try the peas or fasting your fish (as mentioned in the links) and making sure the water has the right pH, oxygen levels etc. If none of these works or it gets more depressed and less active, get him to a vet who knows about fish and they can deflate the swim bladder for you. If an infection is what is causing the problems the vet will also be able to recommend treatment. I hope these help.
